Release Blitz: Callen by Kemmie Michaels

Book: CALLEN
Series: Second Chance #3
Author: Kemmie Michaels
Genre: adult erotic romantic suspense
Cover Design: Robin Ludwig designs

Synopsis

Violence shaped Callen Reed’s childhood. Special Forces forged his adulthood. When the woman he loves is murdered, revenge should be both simple and necessary. Love, however, opened his heart once, and may also have the potential to save him from the darkness of his grief.

The world lays both love and revenge at his feet. His choice, his consequences.

Excerpt

Before I can respond, his mouth covers mine solidly. The teasing, testing motions of his body from the past hours crumble. The intensity between us has me spinning, and the sensation of his steel cock entering me erases the rest of the world, blocking out my need to comprehend his state of mind. As he observed, my emotions and physical response to him are complicated. He demonstrates his understanding by offering slow, gentle caresses along my curves which build into heavy, desperate, grips along my entire form. His knowledge goes far beyond my physical needs. His eyes meet mine every time I need the connection. He takes a moment to hold my hand when my emotions overwhelm me. He kisses my neck with passion, and kisses my knuckles with romance. Then, when emotion gives way to carnal need, he takes my body higher, faster, and harder, only to gently hold me together so I don't fall apart from the crushing power. More and more time passes as he takes my mind, body and soul into a molten, pliable form which belongs only to him. He brings me to orgasm twice as he spends untold minutes making love to me. I wish I could figure out how to speak, but my eyes alone seem to find the way to communicate. Answering my unspoken words, he murmurs to me, "I already know." With no more words between us, Callen eases his body into mine again, and begins making love to me in a display of passion more pure and bright than anything I've ever known. The slow, subtle movement of his hips urges the smoldering heat in my body to flame. He holds my gaze while he moves with me. His fingertips trace wispy lines along my shoulders and neck while he watches me softly with undeniable love in his eyes. One tear escapes my eyelashes, pushed out to make room for the overwhelming emotion roiling inside me. He brushes his thumb across the tear and continues loving me in every way possible. When he brings me to the brink again, one final time, I lay below him in awe, in love, and wondering how I earned the privilege of owning his heart. We lie together, now holding tightly in our embrace. I'm near weeping at the sensation of bringing my body and my mind in sync more powerfully than ever. I never imagined love could be this amazing. Before Callen, I experienced love through the filter of clinical analysis. Occasionally I learned twisted ideas of love through the rants of violent criminals. But this…this is full-bodied bliss, wrapped in deep emotion and physical perfection. "I love you," Callen whispers as he tucks me against his chest tightly. "And now you see," he says, adding a tinge of sadness to his voice. An unease settles into me at his tone. I have yet to speak a word to him, and words continue to fail me. "You see who I really am," he says quietly. "I learn, I assess, I manipulate. I do what's needed...what I want. I take my advantage." Both fear and anger filter into my thoughts as I stare at him in disbelief. I say an internal prayer I'm misunderstanding his words.

MY REVIEW
CALLEN centers on Callen Reed and his path of revenge after the loss of his girl, Evelyn. His mission for revenge leaves no time to be side tracked by anything else until Quinn Porter becomes a distraction for him.

Quinn, a prison psychologist, is both smart and beautiful and Callen finds himself attracted to her but he is still grieving for Evvie. Reconciling his feelings for both women, Callen begins to move on.

CALLEN is an angsty, emotional read that will have your feelings on a roller coaster. One moment you will be glad to see Callen moving on and then next, you'll be dipping downwards. The battle of reconciling the death of a loved one with that fact you are still alive and young and have to eventually move on, is a hard one. I felt for Callen. And for Quinn.

I loved Callen's character and his protectiveness and kind heart. I loved how he was helping Shelby, remembering Evvie, and falling for Quinn. Callen is a good friend and bringing the group: Ledger, Mason, and Shelby back together in this book shows that. As for Shelby, I love her and cannot wait for her book. She is such a strong character to go through everything she has been dealt.

4 1/2 stars for Callen.

About The Author

Mother of Two Boys...
My husband and I have been married for 17 years and are blessed with two amazing young men. They are 10 and 12 right now, and both are on very different parts of the autism spectrum. I’ve learned so much being their mom and I feel pretty lucky to have become part of a community of loving, understanding people.

If you’d like to meet my oldest son, watch Big Bang Theory and shake hands with Sheldon. Those two are so similar, straight down to the fake laugh when they recognize something is funny.

My youngest cannot be explained. He’s more of an experience, and a joyful one at that.

Romance Novelist...
I’ve always loved to write. I’ve written for newspapers and magazines, also a host of personal projects. Then in December of 2012 I was reading on my first Kindle, gobbling up romances left and right. That’s when I fell in love with Ethan Blackstone, by the way.

I was inspired to sit down and write. Less than one year later I’ve published three books, written another and its sequel novella, and started on two more. Another series popped into my head, as well. Now as of August of 2014, I’m on the verge of publishing book six, with at least five started or specifically planned. Since I’m sure I won’t update this bio for a long time, you’ll have to rely on my Facebook updates to know what’s going on with Kemmie Michaels romances. You can also subscribe to my newsletterfor releases, covers, sales, and other news.

...and I LOVE coffee.

Unlike Any Other

AJ

The name AJ Colthurst may not have any meaning to the public eye, but it should, as I’m the daughter of two famous celebrities. Like any superstar, they crave privacy; so much of it, they built a house in the middle of nowhere for us children. As we grew older, we discovered the lies they built as a fort to protect us from the media, ended up causing emotional damage along the way.

I carry a portion of the guilt on my shoulders; the other part I discovered is the separation of my parents. Their unorthodox ways may have driven me bonkers, but knowing they are no longer together is unacceptable.

That’s why I decided to rattle their cage by reminding at least one of my parents of the past and the reason they belong together. They need to remember why their love is so perfect and why they have to fight to keep it alive. Even if it means I have to dredge up some of my own painful memories along the way.

Gabe

Back in the early eighties, I set myself to succeed in the financial world. The first step had been moving to New York City to become a stockbroker, but things didn’t work out the way I had hoped. Instead, I ended up making movies and by the end of the decade, Gabe Colt had become a famous name. The downside to my career of choice: the paparazzi. In order to protect my family and our privacy, I maintained my family away from the circus. It had been for their own good; a decision we had made before we started our family.

However, those past decisions ended up chasing my entire family away and now I’m trying to put the pieces back together along with my little girl.

AJ

The lies between my parents and I came to light and now I’m working on a new life for myself. Along the way, I have my trusty superhero, Mason, to lean on when I have a hard time standing or when my crazy ex-boyfriend continues to feel he has a claim on me.

Porter has trouble understanding that there hasn’t been an ‘us’ for more than three years plus all the issues he had brought upon himself. My father was right, drugs do kill. My other concern is the growing feelings I am having regarding Mason. There’s something between us I want to explore but I keep getting mixed signals. Here, I thought that after telling my parents about my lies and having their full support, things wouldn’t be as complicated as they are.

Mason

My parents divorced before I even made my entrance into this world. My father has been obsessed with that love for years while my mother searches for love in all the wrong places. I don’t want a place to call home or a girl I can claim as mine. Except… Ainsley Janine –better known as ‘Nine’—has some special power that makes me question my preferences. The more I try to stay away from her, the more she pulls me closer.

Exploring the possibilities of having something steady in my life isn’t a problem; it’s the long term that worries me. In addition to that, the scumbag she dated years ago keeps popping up everywhere we go. If I could use my license to kill, maybe I can stop worrying about one thing and concentrate on what to do with the green eyed girl who keeps me awake most nights.

excerpt

Unlike Any Other

“So that’s it; bye, bye to the old, hello Twinkie wife?”

His gaze drops and I take it as a yes.

“Where is the big love, the one that happens once in a lifetime? What happened to it? If you lost it like that, then there’s no hope for the rest of us, Dad.”

No wonder my relationship fell apart like it did. The dreamer in me thought back to my sixteen-year-old self when I thought I had found the great love that could withstand everything. I claimed to have what my parents had … almost three years later reality slapped me, no, reality crushed me.

Gabriel doesn’t speak. He has no comeback or comment to what I say. He makes a one-eighty degree turn and stares out at the blue sea.

I don’t count how long he’s immobilized in front of the window, nor do I move. However, after what feels like hours, he extends his hand and curls his fingers toward me. The moment I’m next to him, he puts his arm around my shoulder and hugs me tight, kissing the top of my head.

I hug my dad for the first time in years and my back relaxes.

I’m home.

“You can stay together in the name of love just for so long, AJ,” his voice has lost all the strength, the shield is down.

My body and soul identify with his, we’re defeated, sad and with only so much energy left to continue.

This is one of the traits we share, putting on a brave front while withering inside.

“Lately, I wonder if what we had justified being together for so long.” I hate those words as he lets them out. “Was it real or a fantasy we built and once reality hit we couldn’t keep it together. It hurts, being apart is painful—I won’t lie.”

Really, it hurts? Because there’s a woman outside—pregnant. I want to yell at him, my teeth grind, but I don’t let my anger get the best of me.

Not yet.

“It was mutual, we came to the conclusion that we wanted different things, our lives were going in different directions, and now I’m trying to build something—a new life?”

The uncertainty in his voice is a gift, a speckle of light that gives me hope. The words… well, they sound like a speech they—my parents agreed on giving us. That’s the way they were while growing up, one parental front. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but my money is on him. Gabriel called it off.

This is unfair. My parents drove me insane with their rules. Their crazy ideas and lies to the outside world. However, they are a match made in heaven. They are like milk and cookies, one can’t go without the other.

“This is wrong.” I shake my head. “You can’t finish a once in a lifetime love story like that,” I weakly claim. “Each time you told the story, it didn’t sound as if you made some sacrifices for us. It sounded as if you did it out of love. Am I wrong? Would you like to revise your story?”

He shakes his head.

“You should. Let’s do a play-by-play,” I suggest. “Maybe you can come clean and clear up all the lies you added to it when you told it as we grew up.”

“They weren’t lies,” he defends himself. “Maybe we skipped a few details… not many. We couldn’t disclose everything to our small children.”

“Once upon a time I thought I found what you did, Dad,” my bottom lip quivers, but I continue, “but everything crumbled, and… now I’m a cynic who doesn’t want to feel or believe. You’re proving me right, love is a shitty thing.”

“It isn’t, I can prove you wrong.”

“I’m all ears, Dad.”

Unsurprisingly Complicated

I come out of the shower and head to my closet. The second shower in the past two hours. Our romantic second date was running. Some watch movies, others go to galleries, and a few repeat the dinner scene. We went for a jog. Well, we jogged and chatted at Washington Park Arboretum. A great experience, as we had a regular Mason-Ainsley interaction: work, my plans for the school, why I quit the substitute gigs.

I check myself in the full-size mirror while combing my hair. Today, I’m not trying to impress anyone, not even myself. A white tank top, a black maxi skirt, and a pair of flat sandals will have to serve its purpose. I pull my hair into a bun. Today’s a cleaning house and running errands kind of day. There’s a shopping list on my phone that MJ sent over; those two swear I’m their executive assistant. Maybe later, I can head to the farmers market for some fresh fruit for their place and mine. But before I do any of those, I head to the kitchen to grab a snack. But before I reach the kitchen, the bell rings. I walk to the kitchen and check the monitor above the refrigerator. One of the front porch cameras shows Mason’s grainy face; the other camera, his broad shoulders covered by a dark t-shirt.

“In a minute,” I say pressing the intercom button.

“Forgot something?” I question as I swing the door open.

His eyes sweep over my body, from head to bottom and all the way back. That cocky grin appears, but I only see it for a few seconds as Mason’s lips take possession of mine. It’s only a quick taste that leaves my mouth needing more. “This kissing you whenever I want is better than any video game I’ve ever played.”

“You’re such a geek, Mason Bradley.” My voice comes out dreamy because we both know that video games are one of his passions, and my kisses trump that. “Not that I mind you kissing me senseless, but you left twenty minutes ago saying ‘thank you for the best second date’ and I assumed you called it a day.”

“Date number two is over.” He lifts his arm, and I notice he’s holding a grocery bag. “We’re on date number three, Nine. Breakfast time!” His excited voice resonates through the walls.

My spine straightens, and I tilt my head as I stare into his gray eyes. “Three dates in less than twenty-four hours? That’s cheating the system.” In fact, part of yesterday’s conversation replays in my head. The exact words were, ‘I’m leaving later tonight for a job.’ “What happened to that mission you had last night?” I cross my arms, my eyes become two slits and my foot taps on the floor.

“I delegated.” He lifts a shoulder slightly then slumps his entire back. Not sure if he’s being casual about it or regretting it. “Maybe I wanted to accelerate the process when you mentioned that five date rule. However, after you stopped obsessing with having the perfect date and loosened up, I got to enjoy parts of you I’ve never had before.” He gives me a peck on the lips. “Including the physical portion of a relationship. Today I want to spend more time with you.”

Surprising, yet expected. For a guy who doesn’t believe, he’s wooing with his own style. Yet I’ve always known he’s sweet.

Unlike Any Other
by Claudia Burgoa

Unlike Any Other is the story of Hollywood actor, Gabe Colt, and his daughter AJ. Told in both story form as Gabe and AJ tell each other their own personal stories, the book is also told in the present.

Gabe begins his story back in the 80's with the start of his career, meeting the love of his life, and raising a family. Gabe's story is surprising and although sometimes he does not come off as the best, Gabe is a real character. He is flawed, but he cares deeply for those he loves. I loved the surprising twist that Claudia Burgoa gives us as Gabe's significant other. I never saw it coming, but as soon as it was mentioned all the pieces fell into place and I was truly rooting for this couple.

AJ on the other hand is broken, but strong. Porter, AJ's alcoholic, abusive ex did a number on her and took advantage of the way she was raised in order to twist her mind. I could not stand Porter and the whole time I was thinking to myself I hope AJ does not take him back. AJ is flawed also, but her strength and determination make her such a brilliant character. As you read the book you find yourself wondering what will happen with AJ next. Where will she go from here? I was glad she went home and confronted her demons while opening up. It helped her a lot.

I enjoyed all the characters - leads and secondary characters - that were mentioned, sans Porter. Mason is the one who intrigued me the most. He comes off as quite mysterious and you can tell that he has a story to tell.

Burgoa brings a family together and shows that the love of a family can heal wounds. I loved this story and how it centers on hope, redemption, forgiveness, and family.

I really enjoyed the way Burgoa choose to tell the story in the past and present so that we got both characters stories. My only wish was that there was an epilogue featuring Gabe and his significant other and the truth coming out. I wanted to see it from Gabe's eyes.

Unlike Any Other is  unlike any other book I have read and I gladly rate it a five !

Unsurprisingly Complicated
by Claudia Burgoa

Unsurprisingly Complicated is Mason's story. Mason was introduced in Unlike Any Other as AJ 's (Or as Mason calls her 'Nine') good friend and superhero protector. Mason comes off as intriguing and mysterious but has a big heart when it comes to AJ. Mason has always been the Ten to AJ's Nine since they were children. They know each other but some things are better left unsaid. AJ and Mason anchor one another and are always there for each other no matter the situation and Mason has helped her through a lot of tough times in her life.

AJ and Mason's love story is a long time coming and seems to have been obvious that it would happen from the very start. Each one of them had to go through the rough to get to where they could be together and be good together.

Mason is strong, sexy, and intelligent and he uses that intelligence to run a very successful security firm. As AJ has stated, Mason is kind of like a super hero.  From the time Mason was introduced in Unlike Any Other, I genuinely liked his character and that only grew with this book. The total opposite of her ex, Mason has everything AJ needs.

Speaking of that ex, Porter just gets on my nerves thinking he has some sort of claim on AJ.

Unsurprisingly Complicated is emotionally engaging and leaves you breathless. As crazy as this family  can come across, I have a soft spot for the Colhurst clan and Mason, of course.  Burgoa sets the bar high with this book and leaves me anxiously awaiting the next one in this family's saga. Once again I have to give Unsurprisingly Complicated five stars!

Never fall for a rockstar...

Julian Wheaton views the world through a kaleidoscope of synesthesia, seeing the colors of every sound he hears. His life as an iconic rock guitarist was a stressful psychedelic trip that nearly destroyed him. Now he’s abandoned the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle for the peaceful sanctity of his recording studio, but when fiery Cleo Compton comes to work for him, she brings chaos with her.

Cleo Compton has had her flings with rockstars—and it’s left her wary and bruised. Julian may have those sexy bedroom eyes and drool-worthy tattoos, but Cleo is determined to keep things strictly professional—until Julian turns out to be every dream she’s ever chased. When he risks it all to hit the road with a band again, Cleo fears he’ll return as the one thing she can no longer abide—a rockstar.

MY REVIEW
Rock stars, groupies, craziness.. Oh my! Color Me Crazy is a whirlwind of romance and music with a swoon-worthy and unique lead male rockstar and a crazy, but humorous woman who makes him want to settle down.

Julian Wheaton isn't your typical rockstar - or at least he's not these days. Preferring to play background music and own his own recording studio, Soundbox, Julian is low key compared to his days in a popular rock band. When he meets Cleo, he's instantly attracted to her and yet finds himself in one unfortunate situation after another when it comes to her.

Cleo Compton should come with her own warning sign: "CAUTION! Danger ahead!". Every time Julian Wheaton ends up within five feet of her, he has the marks to show for it. Cleo, Addie's friend, is introduced to Julian on her birthday and from the start an attraction is obvious and their connection is there.

Julian, who has synesthesia, sees the world in color and when Cleo enters his life she brings the color of orange and the smell of tangerines with her. Julian lets down his guard and let's Cleo see him for who he is, flaws and all. In return Cleo accepts him.

When Julian gets a fantastic offer it's up to him to decide if playing music and touring  is what he wants or if it will be too much for him. Along the way Cleo is there to lend her support until something happens that may just be too much for their relationship to bear.

Color Me Crazy features a cast of unique but lovable characters. Julian is a different rockstar from ones I have previous read about. For starters his synesthesia stands out and makes him unique. Another thing is he is not a current rockstar and instead spends his days recording records for other acts. With a keen sense of style, fantastic taste in music and so much talent, Julian blows your mind away and makes you swoon like a groupie. Cleo is a crazy woman, but a good kind of crazy. She's a hazard to Julian from the beginning but has a positive influence on him. With a sense of humor and a.. Hmm..unique sense of style, Cleo is both Julian's polar opposite and perfect match. Last but not least I want to mention a few secondary characters who stood out to me. First up is Sheik and his unwavering loyalty to Julian. He's a good friend. I am curious to hear his story and see him find a happy ending. Also, I am very, very interested in Ben and Marcus. I think this couple is adorable and I would love to read their story someday.

As for the plot and setting, Color Me Crazy is set in San Antonio and the descriptions of the area and places are great. This is the first time I read a book set in San Antonio and I was glad that Cplor Me Crazy was my first. San Antonio cherry popped? Check! The plot itself is not your typical rockstar romance which of course makes it stand out among the rest - in a good way of course. I loved the fact that Julian was not your typical rock star and that he saw the world in color. I loved the humor and mishaps between Cleo and Julian in the book. These two sure keep you on your toes and turning the pages for more.

Carol Pavliska's debut book is a hit! Color Me Crazy showcases her talent and from beginning to end, readers are sure to realize that Color Me Crazy will not be a one hit wonder, but just the first of many wonderful books from Pavliska to come.

I wish that I could give this book a lot more than five stars but alas, I cannot. Therefore, I shall say this is a 5+ star read and I look forward to more from Pavliska. If you love rockstar romance, you are sure to love this one!
