Book Spotlight: Hearts on Fire by Ashli Cassidy

Title: Hearts on Fire
Author: Ashli Rose
Genre: Romance
Release Date: July 3, 2014

It has been five years since Ava Kingston left her parents’ house in New Jersey. She ran and never looked back, all because of one night. One night that could’ve changed her life forever. Now living in Chicago, working as a journalist, Ava thinks her life is finally where it should be. She is working toward a promotion, has a great family, and a few amazing friends. What more could a girl want? Just when Ava comes to a calming sense of closure in her life, her past reappears in the form of the Hunks in Uniform calendar. Will Ava’s feelings for this fearless firefighter resurface against her better judgment? Or will Ava try to forget the one person she ever really loved?

Gavin Sawyer is a Chicago firefighter who is stopping many women’s hearts as a model for the Hunks in Uniform calendar. Gavin only tried out for the calendar because of her—the one person who knew he was worthy of such prestige. He knew how much she wanted him to do it, but then she was gone. Without a warning, Ava left Gavin behind with a broken heart and bruised ego. He loved her, but she ran. One night separated them forever. Now, five years later, Gavin will stop at nothing to win her back. A chance encounter with Ava sets his heart on fire and proves that old feelings really do die hard.

Excerpt:
“Come on,” Gavin said as he pulled her over to a group of people gathered around two men singing “Imagine” by John Lennon. Ava turned to Gavin with a look of shock. He remembered. She had told him in conversation the week before that she loved classic rock, especially The Beatles. She also told him that if she ever had a daughter, she would name her Lennon. Thinking back on it, Ava was surprised Gavin asked her out after that comment. Ava held Gavin’s bicep and laid her head against his arm. She closed her eyes and listened to the two men sing one of her favorite songs. At one point, she began to sway, and she felt Gavin pull her into his body. It felt right being with him. Their bodies fit together perfectly, and she didn’t want to break contact with him. Fire was shooting through her veins, and she couldn’t believe that someone’s touch could do this to her. When the two men were done, the crowd erupted in a loud applause. Ava didn’t notice, but she had been crying. That song always did it to her.
“Are you OK, Ava?” Gavin asked as he wiped a tear with the pad of his thumb.
“I’m fine, Gavin. That is my favorite song, and I always get emotional when I listen to it. That was amazing. Thank you.”
“Of course, but you haven’t seen the best part.” Gavin pulled her through the crowd, and in the middle of the circle was a huge peace sign made out of stone with the word “Imagine” in the middle. Along the outside of the peace sign was a bunch of different flowers outlining it. This truly was amazing. Ava could only imagine what John Lennon would’ve been capable of had he been alive today.
Ava looked at Gavin and reached up on her tippy toes to kiss him on the cheek. “Thank you, Gavin. This has been the best date ever.”
Gavin held Ava in his arms and kissed the top of her forehead. “So, could we add this to the list of things that you like?”
Ava laughed into his chest. “Yes, Gavin, we can.”
The next moment happened so quickly Ava didn’t even realize what was going on. Gavin dipped Ava back and planted a sweet kiss on her lips. Thankfully, Ava didn’t scream when it happened, because the kiss probably wouldn’t have been as amazing. Gavin’s lips were so soft against hers, and they tasted like mint and lemons. Ava cupped her hands behind his head and opened her mouth so Gavin could deepen the kiss. Gavin’s hand was on Ava’s lower back, and the other was behind her head. They continued their kiss, dancing with their tongues. They would’ve kept kissing if it weren’t for the applause and whistles they heard around them. They broke their kiss, and Ava buried her head in Gavin’s chest once again.
                “Good job, man!”
                “Get a room!”
Gavin just waved to everyone, and Ava pulled him toward the street.
“Oh my god. That was so embarrassing,” Ava said with a slight blush in her cheeks.
“Was it really that bad kissing me?” Gavin asked with his hand over his heart, faking insult.
“No, the kiss was amazing. I have never done anything like that in public before.”
Gavin pulled Ava closer. “Good. I like that I was able to share that with you. But, I promise, Ava, the next time I kiss you will be behind closed doors, and I will not stop there.”
Ava’s cheeks burned, and she knew she was red. The thought of Gavin’s lips on hers again was causing a stir in her belly. She wasn’t the type of girl to sleep with someone on the first date, but she could make an exception for someone who made it the best date she’d ever had.
If this date gave Ava any clue as to how their relationship would be, Ava was going to be one lucky girl.

Anniversary Celebration: Delicate by Steph Campbell

Title: Delicate
Author: Steph Campbell
Age: Mature YA
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Published: July 2012
 Kobo

Blurb:
Sydney Pierce has just met the guy of her dreams…just don’t tell her psycho boyfriend, Trevor.

With a gorgeous boyfriend, a thriving gymnastics career and a stellar academic record, anyone would assume that Sydney has it all. That's precisely what the seventeen-year-old perfectionist wants you to believe, and she works hard to keep up the pretense. Especially now that there are cameras following her for a documentary on Olympic hopefuls.

When Grant, the charming new student, disrupts her carefully crafted routine, the cracks beneath her perfect façade begin to rise to the surface and despite Trevor's objections to their friendship, she can't stay away from him.

As her connection to Grant pulls her closer to him, the once lighthearted relationship with Trevor takes an intense and dark turn, forcing her into a position in which not only her happiness, but her safety is at stake. Can Sydney learn to let go of everything she is clinging to in order to gain everything she has ever wanted, or will she realize her breaking point too late?

Excerpt: “Thanks for spending your birthday with me.”

He sits next to me on the sofa. It’s wildly inappropriate how good it feels to be this close to him.

“I spent my birthday exactly how I wanted to.”

I can feel his warm breath on my face. I look at him. At his perfectly, unruly hair, a total contradiction, just like our entire relationship. At the small, brown, braided necklace he always wears. At the collar of his brown t-shirt under his white button-up. I look everywhere but his eyes. I know that if I meet his gaze, I will surely lose what little self control I have. I’ll end up making a fool out of myself.

Without a word, he lightly places a small box on my lap. It’s about the size of a book, wrapped neatly in a crisp, navy paper and a dainty silver ribbon. I hope it’s a book. Something simple and impersonal. I can handle  a book.

“You really shouldn’t have done this. I don’t deserve it,” I say.

“Yes, you do. Besides, I told you, I wanted to. I hope you like it.”

I untie the ribbon and lay it neatly across my lap. I feel uneasy with him sitting next to me. I move in slow motion, carefully opening each side of the paper and gently pealing it back. Inside is a dark blue, velvet box that I recognize immediately. It’s the same kind of box that Maisy’s snow globe was put in after I bought it from the aquarium. My heart slams in my chest when I realize what must be inside. It’s definitely not a book. Tears already start to brim in my eyes before I can even get the box open.

“Don’t cry, Syd.” He nudges my hands. “I can take them back, if you want.”

Inside is the elegant strand of fresh water pearls. The strand that’s somehow identical to Mom’s. The one I’d destroyed in my argument with Trevor.

“No. I just, I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much.” I dab at the tears in my eyes with the corner of my sleeve before they can fall.

“You’re welcome,” he says.

Steph’s Fav quotes:

"Letting go is never easy. Especially when you can’t see where you’re going to land. But I’ve learned that sometimes, you just have to throw your weight behind the change. Take the chance that you may fall."

“I loved Trevor wholly. In all the good ways that made me feel alive and special and important. But also, in the bad ways. The ways that shut me off from others and left me alone with my pain. The ways that had me keep secrets. I loved Trevor in all the ways that I thought mattered, even though I knew that I didn’t.”

“So, what, Trevor was the quid and Shayna was the pro quo? I don’t think so, Syd. Playing games is not my style.”

Audible Giveaway + Spotlight: The Thrill of It by Lauren Blakely

The Thrill of It, the first book in the No Regrets series by Lauren Blakey, is available as an audio book now.

You can now listen to Trey and Harley's story as you get caught up in a whirlwind of angst and passion.

SYNOPSIS:
A new adult story of Love. Sex. Addiction. Blackmail. And Power...

Some say love can be an addiction. Others say it's the thing that makes life worth living. Let me tell you everything I know about love...Love isn't patient, love isn't kind. Love is a game, a chase. A thrill. Love is wild and war-like, and every man and woman must fight for themselves. At least that's how it was for me. A high-priced virgin call girl by the time I started college, I was addicted to love and to sex. Even though I've never had either. I controlled love, played it, and held the world in the palm of my hands. Then I fell down from those highs, and I'm being blackmailed for all my mistakes, forced to keep secrets from everyone, except the only guy I don't regret.

Trey...

With all the other women, I knew what they were. They were temporary. They were pills, they were bottles, they took away all the pain, and numbed the awful memories that wore down my ragged, wasted heart. Until I met Harley. She's the only girl I ever missed when she walked away. But now she's back in my life, every day, and there are no guarantees for us, especially since I don't know how to tell her my secrets. What happened to my family. All I know is she's the closest I've ever come to something real, and I want to feel every second of it.

How can you love with no regrets when regret is all you know?

Book Spotlight: Thirty-Eight Days by Len Webster

Every storm has a beginning, every storm has a perfect moment of bliss and every storm has a destructive end.                                       -Thirty-Eight Days
SYNOPSIS: Nolan Parker and Clara Lawrence never saw eye to eye. In fact, if you asked Clara she would tell you that Nolan Parker hated every thing about her. They never shared any form of connection besides Alex Lawrence.
She was Alex’s bratty sister and he was Alex’s best friend, they never stood a chance.
Five years have passed and almost 12,000 miles have kept them separated, both living completely different lives. Unchanged perceptions and expectations should have kept them apart but when Nolan returns, the foundations of their ‘relationship’ is sure to change.

Their story was meant to end the day Nolan left for Stanford. But what if seeing each other after five years was the game changer? What if this was their one chance to rewrite their relationship or were they always destined to never be more?

“If I had everything I ever wanted, I’d have you. But I don’t.”
                                              ♥
EXCERPT: Reaching the balcony to close the doors, he found Clara leaning over the rail, her back towards him. He watched as her dress and her hair flew with the wind. He was sure she was cold, because he could feel the cold pricks hit his own naked chest. Noel walked over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and settling his chin on Clara’s shoulders. Clara didn't resist his touch, and he was hoping he was transferring his body heat to her.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t wake you, did I?” she asked softly as she turned her head slightly to meet his. Clara placed a kiss on his cheek and moved herself closer into Noel’s embrace.
“No, I just woke and saw you were gone.”
“I just needed some fresh air,” she sighed out.
“Are you sure that’s all you needed?” he asked. Clara tensed in his hold.
“What do you mean?”
Noel let out a heavy groan. Clara spun in his arms and faced him, her hands on his chest.
“Noel, tell me what you mean?”
“If you want space, Clara, I’m willing to give it to you. If you think this is going too fast, then I’m willing to wait by the barracks. But don’t run from me, please,” he quietly begged as he moved her hair out of her face. Clara’s face turned bleak.
“Is that question number four?” Her eyes looked at his chest. Earlier in the night her lips made his question nonexistent.
“No, question four was… if this was something you wanted? Do you really want an us?” he asked. His heart squeezing at the thought of the possible rejection that he was facing. Her eyes made their way up until he was staring right into those golden pools of uncertainty.
“I–I,” she stuttered for a second before she closed her eyes and composed herself.
“I want an us. I promise you, Noel, that’s what I want,” she said as she raised her hand to his cheek and resting it there. He felt his heart being consumed by relief.
But what about Liam…
“Question number five, is it me you really want?”
“Where is this all coming from?” The wind picked up and Noel felt Clara shiver against him. He brought her closer to his body and held her against the railing.
“I just want you to be sure, that’s all,” he confessed. The nerves in him increasing but he was able to compose himself enough to wait for her to speak.
“I am unbelievably sure. I mean, this between us is a little crazy, and maybe even a little unconventional, but I’m sure I want you. In fact, I’ve never been more sure in my life.”

“Every minute of every day that I’ve spent with you; you completely changed me. I see, feel, and even breathe differently now that I'm with you. I don’t deserve you, but I promise, I’ll do what it takes to make you happy. I don’t ever want to hurt you again.”
♥
I think it was the moment I first laid eyes on you that I started to fall in love with you. But the stupid idiot in me tried to deny myself of this feeling.

Book Spotlight: Real Dogs Don't Whisper by Kelly Preston & Mr. MaGoo

About Real Dogs Don’t Whisper

The award winning book, Real Dogs Don't Whisper (www.realdogsdontwhisper.com), which highlights my life journey caring for four special needs dogs and the life lessons they taught me along the way.  The overall message within Real Dogs Don’t Whisper is about giving those with special needs a second chance.  The book touches on integrity, unconditional love, leadership, trust, stopping abuse and opening your heart to receive and give both unconditional love and friendship.  To lighten the message, I developed a co-author, Mr MaGoo; Mr MaGoo is my Lhasa Apso and he is larger than life.  He adds humor within the book; sharing with the reader how life is so tough for him being the only male in the house and living with a crazy lady, me.

Things You Should Know about Mr. MaGoo –
the Coauthor or Real Dogs Don’t Whisper
Mr. MaGoo is a nine-year-old Lhasa Apso and the book’s co-creator and co-writer. He is, in his own words, “the alpha and omega of all dogs – in the cutest and sparkiest, most fun-loving package ever.” Ignoring Kelly’s persistent eye-rolling, Mr. MaGoo has forged ahead with this project in an attempt to, as he puts it, “present the facts from a dog’s perspective. In other words, the correct, most accurate, most interesting, only-one-that-matters perspective,” to which he adds, simply, “Woof!”

Oh my! Mr MaGoo is a clown, even in his senior mature years; I think he found the fountain of youth because he still acts like a puppy.  When he walks, he doesn’t walk, oh no!  When Mr MaGoo walks, he has a prance to his step, as if he knows the world is watching and he is performing for them.  There is nothing bashful about him, he likes to make his presence know; something as simple as being in the room with you no matter how many times you may get up and move.  Or, finding his favorite toy and squeaking it until someone looks his way.  When he was a puppy, his eyes were hidden which is how I arrived at his name.  As the years went on and after many grooming appointments, his eyes started to take on the appearance that he has eye liner on.  Kid you not!  To this day, I often hear the comment that he looks like he is wearing eyeliner.  Who knows?  Maybe he was born for the lime light after all?

About Kelly Preston

Kelly Preston is, first and foremost, an animal lover. Raised on a ten-acre property in a small town in Pennsylvania, she grew up with horses, rabbits, and – of course – dogs. When she left home after college, she acquired Gizmo, an irresistible Lhasa Apso that started her on a journey full of joys and sorrows, hopes and tribulations, frustrations, endless lessons in patience, and above all else, love. All of this has come at the hands (more precisely the paws) of Gizmo, Betty Boop, Buffy, Carla Mae, and the inimitable Mr. MaGoo.

Mommy Review:

We sat down to read Mister Spunky not knowing background on the book.
For once, I didn't know the preset for this book.
I was amazed when I learned that it was about friendship and bullying and acceptance.
What an incredible way to reach out to kids.
Mister Spunky is the cool kid!
Along his way to the very cool beach he runs into new friends.
First, we meet the very scared Buffy who was bullied.
Mister Spunky befriends Buffy and they head to the beach!
And then on the way they meet...Carla, the angry dog.
Carla was very angry and growling lots.
But Buffy and Mister Spunky still befriended her...and they headed to the beach!
And then, they run into Miss Sunshine, the little blind pup.
Miss Sunshine is afraid to move because she is blind.
Carla, Buffy, and Mister Spunky agree to help and befriend Miss Sunshine.
The four new friends travel to the beach.
They help one another, have a great time, and enjoy new friendships.
Mister Spunky never gave up and had lots of fun learning about his new friends.

The book ends with some beautiful coloring pages that can equate to hours
of good family fun time and more conversations.

The story is based roughly on the real life pups that Kelly Preston has.
We learn a great lesson about slowing down in life,
and remembering to find the good in anyone.
And we also learn how valuable being a good friend is.

What an amazing book for children!
