Sean Proper, the youngest principal ever to head the renowned Kensington Academy, knows he’s smart and driven to succeed, but he has no idea he’s also living proof that miracles do happen. Unaware of the truth, he can’t foresee how radically his life will be altered by his introduction to Prim Aurora, a businesswoman whose past is shrouded in mystery. Each having extremely different and unusual upbringings, neither Sean nor Prim ever intend to become seriously involved in any romantic relationship. Prim’s inexplicable fears, Sean’s need to be in control, and the appearance of a dead body in the Aurora family home will test the passion and love between them. As their relationship is jeopardized by past events and a killer still on the loose, their determination and commitment to their dream of a life spent together is threatened. Only elusive revelations regarding the secrets in Prim’s past and the circumstances relating to the miracle surrounding Sean’s birth can provide Prim and Proper with the promise of a happy future.
Prim Aurora, a small town girl and the descendant of the founder of Aurora, is independent, intelligent, beautiful and young. But she's self conscious of herself and her sexuality. Never having been kissed or showing any interest in any boy or man in all her years, all that changes when Sean Proper walks into her store for the first time. Finding herself attracted to Sean and admitting to that attraction is one thing, but going any further than holding his hand is a whole other.
Sean Proper is used to taking care of those in his life. From his parents to his sister, and even himself at such a young age, Sean knows how to be a caregiver. What he doesn't know is how to help Prim open up. Not wanting to rush her or hurt her in anyway, Sean stands by her side and tries to help her the best he can.
When a body turns up in Prim's family home and a killer is on the loose, Prim and Sean are forced to look back on their pasts and see what lies there. Will the truth bring them closer or tear them apart? Only once the secrets once hidden are revealed will Prim and Sean be able to walk away or come closer together.
Prim and Proper is the perfect blend of mystery and romance. As you begin reading the book you think it's basically a romance with two young people coming together and trying to withstand a relationships and the tests that come their way, and you would be halfway correct. The whole other half of this book is a mystery, from a dead body being discovered to Aurora family secrets becoming uncovered. There are so many twists and turns in this book, you never know what will happen next.
I found Prim and Proper an enjoyable read and all the twists and turns I've mentioned kept me on a roller coaster ride since I didn't know what would happen or which secrets would be unveiled next. I loved the fact that the characters kept holding on to their relationship and fighting for it, instead of just giving up. The other thing I really liked was how Sean's parents were mentally challenged but instead of being ashamed of them he was beyond proud of who his parents were and thankful that they had him, raised him, and loved him.
This was the first time I've read a Barbara Cutrera book, but it will not be the last. With 4.5 stars from Bottles & Books Reviews, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book.
“Just because I'm Prim doesn't mean I always have to be proper.”
“But because I'm Proper, I always need you to be Prim.”
“Prim and Proper. That sounds like a great title for a book.”
“As long as there's a happily-ever-after ending.”
