Blog Tour: A Little Broken by Juli Valenti

Title: A Little Broken
Author: Juli Valenti
Genre: Contemporary Romance

SYNPOSIS:
Jessie Braden thought she had it all. A husband, a new baby – her life was on course, exactly what she always wanted…Until one day, she loses everything.

Ruined and broken, she’s left alone to pick up the pieces of her life. Unable to cope, she spontaneously packs up and moves across the country, hoping that new scenery will help.
Once in sunny Florida, she finds an apartment and a job but while Jessie is surviving, she isn’t living…until one night she meets someone. Dominick.
Desperate for an escape from the pain of her memories, she relents to his unerring determination and agrees to spend time with him.
Through his patience and understanding, she will learn that she’s not ruined…she’s just a little broken.

EXCERPT: “I just sat you a hottie, Jess,” Courtney, one of the diner’s only hostesses, whispered in her ear. “He’s at thirty-four, and he’s alone!”
Jessie raised her eyebrows. It was almost nine o’clock and she was pretty sure she was going to be cut soon. It was a slow night. Nodding, she grabbed her order book and made her way toward her newly, and only, seated table.
“Hello, can I get you something to –”Jessie stopped midsentence as familiar honey eyes looked up at her.  In the light, he was even more handsome than he’d been just hanging out his car in the dark. His face was clean shaven, revealing a strong jaw line and a kind smile. She could smell his cologne and it was amazing, manly and musky at the same time.
“Jessie! What a surprise seeing you here. I didn’t know this was where you worked!” Dominick said, smiling up at her. Something in his tone told her that it wasn’t really a surprise to him, and that he was here, in her section, on purpose.
“Donald, right?” Jessie said, secretly enjoying the look of indignation that filled his face as she called him the wrong name. She knew his name, how could she not? She’d been thinking about their encounter for the last two days.
“Dominick. Dominick Wace,” he corrected her, still smiling.
“Ha. You sound like James Bond. Okay, Dominick, what can I get you to drink?”
“Hmm, how about a coffee?” he answered, eyes sparkling.
“Sure, I’ll be right back,” Not giving him a chance to saying anything else, she went in search of Courtney.  She found her in the prep area, giggling with Layla, Jessie’s serving partner for the evening.
“Courtney, did he specifically ask to be seated in my section?” Jessie asked as she poured Dominick’s coffee, and gathered sugar and fresh cream from the cold storage.
“Yeah, and good for you, girl! He’s so hot!”
Unsurprised, she walked the coffee over and placed it in front of Dominick.
“You do know that stalking is illegal in all fifty states, right?” she asked him, trying to make it sound tart and unfriendly, but failing.
“Stalking is only illegal if it has malicious intent. I don’t think the law says anything about a man’s determination to get a beautiful woman to agree to go out for coffee. I mean, it’s coffee. Everyone loves coffee, right?”
“I’m allergic to coffee,” she told him. Liar, liar pants on fire a small voice, that sounded a lot like the ‘old’ her sounded off in her head.
“Why, Pinocchio, I believe your nose is growing,” he teased.
“Okay, so I’m not allergic to coffee, you caught me.”
“Go out for coffee with me, Jessie. You won’t regret it. I promise to not hog the cream and sugar.”
Jessie thought about it. For every reason she had to not go, she came up with four more on why she should. If she were to tell the truth, she didn’t really want to go home. Every night she was home alone, with nothing but her own thoughts. Maybe Toni was right, maybe she should get out, make an effort. But with that thought, she was scared. She’d built up a wall between her and the world, and wasn’t sure she could handle it breaking down.
“I can’t,” she said, holding up a hand to stop him when he opened his mouth, “I have to work. You have, after all, come to sit in my table, keeping me from being cut for the evening.”
“Oh, that’s an easy fix,” he said, casually.
“It is?” she asked him, staring. His complete confidence shook her as well as intrigued her.
“Sure it is. UNCLE!” he called out, loudly, causing several of the few customers to turn to look at him. He just shrugged at them, and looked expectant as he sat there. Within a few seconds, Mr. C came out of the back office, walking toward them both with a small smile playing on his face.
“Ah, Dominick, I thought I heard you out here, harassing my staff,” Mr. C. said, laughing as he took Dominick’s hand and clapped him on the back in a familiar hug.
“Now, Uncle, I’m not harassing your staff. We do have a bit of a dilemma here, though. You see, I’ve asked this pretty young lady to accompany me for coffee twice now. The first time, she turned me down flat, if you can believe that! This time that I asked, she said that she can’t because she has to work.”
Mr. C’s smile widened, as he looked from Dominick to Jessie. Jessie was sure that she was turning six shades of purple from the attention, and for not seeing the familiar qualities between the two sooner. She really was off in her world.
“Ah, a beautiful woman turning you down? What is this world coming to?” Mr. C teased.
“A travesty, Uncle. A travesty, I tell you!”
Jessie couldn’t help the grin turning up her lips as she watched the two men banter back and forth. Mr. C chuckled deeply from his throat.
“Well, truth between family and all, I cut Jessie ten minutes ago. She just doesn’t nag me about it like my other employees,” he said, winking at Dominick. Jessie was starting to feel like there may be an underlying conspiracy going on.
“So, Jessie, there’s no reason you can’t go for coffee with me,” Dominick said, his smile lighting his entire face.
“Fine,” Jessie sighed in agreement. She could admit when she’d been beat, and she couldn’t hold a candle to the manipulations of these men.
Mr. C surprised her by clasping her hand gently.
“Have a good time, Jess. You deserve it,” he said softly, before nodding goodbye to his nephew.
Standing, Dominick held his hand out to her. “Come on, pretty lady. Let’s blow this pancake stand.”
Jessie stared at his hand, unsure if she should take it. Her uncertainty must have shown on her face because Dominick stepped a little closer to her.
“It’s okay, Jessie. It’s just a hand. It’s just coffee. No big deal. Well, except for the coffee. Coffee is a big deal.” He wiggled his hand a little bit, and as a small chuckle escaped her, she placed her hand in his. She gripped it, holding on tightly, and wanted, for once, to not just let go.

Turning the Tables - Interview series by Phoenix Ink

I was honored to be a part of the Turning the Tables interview series with Phoenix Ink. For those of you that have not heard of it, Turning the Tables, is where a blogger is picked to be in the hot spot and be interviewed, instead of us bloggers interviewing an author. Neat, right? Here's Bottles & Books Reviews interview.

Turning the Tables with Bottles and Books

First of all, Happy New Year, Phoenix! And I mean that in the not-so-generic-but-really-you-should-find-happiness-this-year sort of way.
This is a time when most people--including myself--make resolutions; plans for the coming twelve months. We take the time to get clear on our goals and dreams. This new year, I am resolved to do more of the things I love with the people I love. I resolve to pursue passion and to pour all my positive energy into my writing and helping others achieve their writing goals and their dreams of being a full-time author making full-time income telling stories.
I resolve to treat people with love and to choose myself without getting bogged down in the guilt and second-guessing of what others think of me. I resolve to live every day like it's my first. And to always say what I mean. My theme song for 2014 is Brave by Sara Bareilles. And to all the Phoenix out there: I want to see you be brave!

Our Turning the Tables series has already been a HUGE hit, so you know. Which makes me so, so happy to see authors wanting to know feedback that will help them do better with their writing and story-producing. I smile when I see the stats telling me how many of you have stopped by.

Today, I sat down with Jess from Bottles and Books Reviews and picked her brain about what exactly she loves about reading and indies and self-publishing... and what we could do better. Here's what she had to say:

Are you a writer?
I am not a writer. Besides blogging the most writing I do these days are in baby books and weekly planners, lol.

Do you have aspirations of publishing a book someday?
Growing up I was a major book worm and English nerd. I always dreamed of being an author and writing the next best seller. Sometimes we stray from those childhood dreams though. These days, I love what I do - promoting authors and reviewing some wonderful books. I am satisfied with being a part of the literary world in some way, but I no longer have the wish to be an author.
But hey, you never know what the future will bring so never say never.

Right! Never is a strong word!

What is your overall opinion of self-publishing?
I support self-publishing and think it’s a good way to do things on your own terms especially if you have goals that you really want to stay true to.
The negative part about self publishing though is that sometimes authors get a bit careless in their writing when it comes to grammar and spelling which can be quite frustrating on someone who is reading the book and can only concentrate on the errors instead of the writing itself.
Hmmm. The problem sounds more like, yup, EDITING.

Do you read self-published books?
Some of my favorite books have been self-published. I think self-published authors deserve a reader’s support.

What is one thing you like about reading or working with indie authors?
I love reading books from indie authors and working with them because they are so personable and really listen to a reader’s feedback are really good at acknowledging their readers.
You mean, like right now? For those reading this post? Yeah. We do.
My friend, Cleo Scornavacca, is a newer indie author I love to work with because she really listens to reader’s feedback while engaging her readers and being open with them. The thing I really love is that she acknowledges the help that bloggers give and knows that we have a life outside of blogging but it’s something we choose to do and that we love to do. As we support authors, she supports bloggers in return and acknowledges all the blogs that do early reviews in her book. It’s simple things like that that make readers and bloggers want to help an author by buying their books or reviewing their work. Being acknowledged in a book can make a reviewer feel good knowing that we were apart of something bigger than ourselves.
Ohhh, this is a great idea for authors to take note of!

What is one thing indie authors are doing well?
Indie authors are working to support one another instead of trying to outdo one another. They encourage each other to meet their goals and to keep going and offer advice and support when needed.
No competition. Only cooperation!

What is one thing indie authors need to work on?
I would have to say some indie authors really need to carefully look over their work and revise the grammatical mistakes along with spelling. When reading a book these mistakes can sometimes be quite frustrating and it makes it hard for a reader to get through a book and to enjoy it.
No comments from the peanut gallery necessary here.

What’s your preferred genre to read in?
I’m very eclectic with my reading choices. I am definitely all over the map when it comes to reading. In the last week I have gone from reading a romance to a children’s book to a science fiction book. I am a woman who enjoys it all. I love mysteries and as a woman, I love romances, but I also like to read paranormal books or historical. As a mother I also like to read and review children’s books so that I can get a feel for the kind of books that are out there today and what they can offer my child.

What kind of story are you most excited to read right now?
I’ve just finished reading a few paranormal books along with some children’s books so I’m excited to read the ARC of Rebecca Rohman’s newest book: Love, Lies, & the DA. I just read her book, Uncorked, not too long ago and loved it so I am looking forward to curling up and reading this one.

What’s your prediction on the next “hot” genre?
NA seems to be growing pretty popular these days, but I’m guessing it won’t be long until another paranormal romance hits the stands and is all the rage.
I've heard this from a few people now. Hmmmm.
Thanks, Jessica, for stopping by!

Book Review: Traitor Savant (Seals of the Duelists #2) by Jasmine Giacomo

Title: Traitor Savant (Seals of the Duelists #2)
Author: Jasmine Giacomo
Published: September 18th 2013
Publisher: Cazar Fiction

Goodreads / Amazon

SYNOPSIS: While Bayan struggles to train his campus hexmates in the forbidden arts of Savantism, Kiwani leaves on the advice of a sint, seeking closure for a painful family secret. But Kah, her hexbird companion, returns to campus without her, and an arbitrary decision sends Head Chanter Doc Theo back to the Temple of Ten Thousand Harmonies in shame.

Though Bayan and his hexmates rescue Kiwani, a second prisoner they free is no friend, and his very existence raises troublesome questions. He promises Bayan secret knowledge that could aid in understanding the deep political currents that threaten to deluge the campus, but when members of a rival hex suffer mysterious attacks, Bayan must decide whether he’s harboring a victim or a killer.

Between the stranger’s secrets and an urgent message from a mysterious, gifted singer at the Temple of Ten Thousand Harmonies, Bayan pieces together a threat against the empire more insidious than even the Aklaa rebellion, but exposing its mastermind will cost Bayan everything he has.

REVIEW: Traitor Savant, the second book of the Seals of the Duelists series, picks up months after the first. Bayan, a hero after saving the emperor, is now embracing who he is and the duelist lifestyle. While Bayan is succeeding, Kiwani is still struggling with the revelations that came to light months prior. In order to find herself, Kiwani must travel outside of the academy. Kiwani does not know what to expect during her travels, but she knows in her heart what must be done in order for her to become one with her magic once more.

While Kiwani is away, Bayan stumbles upon another plot against the emperor. This time though the only way for Bayan to save the emperor and the ones he has come to love and befriend is to become a traitor to the duelist name, leaving him alone with nothing.

After finishing Rebel Elements, I immediately began Traitor Savant. Traitor Savant seemed to flow more naturally for me and was not so slow in the beginning. The writing is fantastic and the imagery the words produce leaves you feeling as if you are there in real time. The characters are all well thought out and formed  and the bond that they begin to feel as a group is strong and real.

I highly enjoyed both Rebel Elements and Traitor Savant and cannot wait to see what lies ahead for both Bayan and his hexmates.

Book Blitz: Insanity by Cameron Jace

Insanity by Cameron Jace
Publication date: December 20th 2013
Genres: Fantasy, New Adult, Paranormal

Synopsis:
After accidentally killing everyone in her class, Alice Wonder is now a patient in the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum. No one doubts her insanity. Only a hookah-smoking professor believes otherwise; that he can prove her sanity by decoding Lewis Carroll’s paintings, photographs, and find Wonderland’s real whereabouts. Professor Caterpillar persuades the asylum that Alice can save lives and catch the wonderland monsters now reincarnated in modern day criminals. In order to do so, Alice leads a double life: an Oxford university student by day, a mad girl in an asylum by night. The line between sanity and insanity thins when she meets Jack Diamond, an arrogant college student who believes that nonsense is an actual science.

EXCERPT: Excerpt from chapter 1

The writing on the wall says it's January 14th. I am not sure what year. I haven't been sure of many things lately, but I’m wondering if it’s my handwriting I’m looking at.
There is an strange key drawn underneath the date. It's carved with a sharp object, probably a broken mirror. I couldn’t have written this. I'm terrified of mirrors. They love to call it Catoptrophobia around here.
Unlike regular patients in the asylum, my room is windowless, stripped down to a single mattress in the middle, a sink, and bucket for peeing--or puking--when necessary. The tiles on the floor are black-and-white squares, like a chessboard. I never step on black. Always white. Again, I'm not sure why.
The walls are smeared with a greasy pale green everywhere. I wonder if it's the previous patient's brains spattered all over from shock therapy. In the Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum, politely known as the Warneford hospital, the doctors have a sweet spot for shock therapy. They love watching patients with bulging eyes and shivering limbs begging for relief from the electricity. It makes me question who is really mad in here.
It's been a while since I was sent to shock therapy myself. Dr. Tom Truckle, my supervising physician, said I don't need it anymore, particularly after I stopped mentioning Wonderland. He told me that I used to talk about it all the time; a dangerous place I claim I have been whisked away to when my elder sister lost me at the age of seven.
Truth is, I don't remember this Wonderland they are talking about. I don't even know why I am here. My oldest vivid memory is from a week ago. Before that, it's all a purple haze.
I have only one friend in this asylum. It's not a doctor or a nurse. And it's not a human. It doesn't hate, envy, or point a finger at you. My friend is an orange flower I keep in a pot; a Tiger Lily I can't live without. I keep it safe next to a small crack in the wall where a single sun ray sneaks through for only ten minutes a day. It might not be enough light to grow a flower, but my Tiger Lily is a tough girl.
Each day, I save half of the water they give me for my flower. As for me, better thirsty than mad.
My orange flower is also my personal rain check for my sanity. If I talk to her and she doesn't reply, I know I am not hallucinating. If it talks back to me, all kinds of nonsense starts to happen. Insanity prevails. There must be a reason why I am here. It doesn’t mean I will easily give in to such a fate.
"Alice Pleasance Wonder. Are you ready?" the nurse knocks with her electric prod on my steel door. Her name is Waltraud Wagner. She is German. Everything she says sounds like a threat and smells like smoke. My fellow mad people say she is a Nazi; that she used to kill her own patients back in Germany. "Get avay vrom za dor. I an coming in," she demands.
Listening to the rattling of her large keychain, my heart pounds in my chest. The turn of the key makes me want to swallow. When the door opens, all I can think of is choking her before she begins to hurt me. Sadly, her neck is too thick for my nimble hands. I stare at her almost-square figure for a moment. Everything about her is four sizes too big, all except her feet, which are as small as mine. My sympathies, little feet.
"Time for your daily ten-minute break," she approaches me with a straitjacket, a devilish grin on her face. I never get out. My ward is underground, and I take my break in another empty ward upstairs, where patients love to play soccer with a hedgehog’s head.
A big muscled warden stands behind Watlraud. Thomas Ogier. He is bald, has an angry-red face and a silver tooth he likes to flash whenever he sees me. His biceps are the size of my head. I have a hard time believing he has ever been a 4-pound baby.
"Slide your arms into the jacket," Waltraud demands in her German accent, a cigarette puckered between her lips. "Slow and easy, Alice," she nods at warden Ogier, in case I misbehave.
I comply obediently and stretch out my arms for her to do whatever she wants. Waltraud twists my right arm slightly and checks the tattoo on my arm. It’s the only tattoo I have. It’s a handwritten sentence that looks like a thin arm band from afar. Waltraud feels the need to read it allowed, “’I can't go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.’” I was told I have written it myself while still believing in Wonderland. “That Alice in Wonderland has really messed with your head.” She puffs smoke into my face as she mocks me.
The tattoo and Waltraud’s mocking is the least of my concerns right now. I let her tie me, and while she does, I close my eyes. I imagine I am a sixteenth century princess, some kind of a lucky Cinderella, being squeezed into a corset by my chain smoking servant in a fairy tale castle above ground, just about to go meet my Prince Charming. Such imagery always helps me breathe. I once heard that it was hope that saves the day, not sanity. I need to cool down before I begin my grand escape.

Q & A with Cameron Jace
Q: Is insanity an Alice in Wonderland retelling where fact and fiction intermingle like in your previous series the Grimm Diaries?
A: It’s not quite a retelling of Alice in Wonderland as much as inspired by it. It has all the whimsical and nonsensical wonderland fantasy parts, but it’s more grounded to reality because it happens in our time. Fact and fiction do walk side by side in this book. For instance, Lewis Carroll is present as character himself.

Q: Why did you call it Insanity?
A: Well, insanity is the main theme of the book. All what Alice has seen could be interpreted as madness in many ways. Also, when you read the book, it’s insane. I mean like really insane. You will either love or hate it. I don’t think there is a middle zone.

Q: Is the story told from many point of views like the Grimm Diaries?
A: Just a few, but most of the story is Alice’s personal journey.

Q: The Grimm Diaries was filled with research, how much did you put in Insanity?
A: I think the research in Insanity is even greater than the Grimm Diaries. The book is also more action oriented. Alice travels from Oxford, London, Vatican City then Belgium in a couple of days. Each city had to be researches and connected with Lewis Carroll and his books.

Q: The blurb says Alice’s sanity can only be proved through Lewis Carroll’s photography and writing. We thought this is about Wonderland.
A: It’s about Wonderland. The idea is that all puzzles, action scenes, and even romance have a Lewis Carroll background to them. The main reason why this book came to my mind is my fascination with both Alice in Wonderland and Lewis Carroll himself. If you learn the reasons behind each character and location in his book, you will love Alice in Wonderland even more. It’s no coincidence that we all relate to the book. It’s a masterpiece.

Q: You said Insanity is more of a TV pilot. How so?
A: I did write it as a novel but also as TV pilot. The reason is that once you get the idea of the book, the possibilities are infinite, and incredibly amusing. When outlining my plot, I found out it would take books and books to write it. So I wrote one story with a beginning, middle, and end. It’s satisfying on its own, but if I succeeded in peaking your interest you should like to read the next books. The beauty of it is that once you read one book, each other book will be a story of its own. It’s very much like a TV series.

Q: Anything you want to add?
A: I wish everyone and awesome Christmas and a Fantabulous new year :) And if I messed with you childhood memories of Alice in Wonderland a bit, don’t hate me. Lol.

AUTHOR BIO
Wonderlander, Neverlander, Unicorn-chaser, enchanter, musician, survived a coma, & totally awesome. Sometimes I tell stories. Always luv the little monsters      I write young adult paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and science fiction mostly. The Grimm Diaries series is a seven book saga that deals with retellings of fairy tales from a young adult POV - it connects most of the fairy tales together and claims to be the truth about fairy tales.      I live in San Fransisco and seriously think circles are way cooler than triangles.
